Frequently asked questions
What is a contrast ratio?
How different two colors look, from 1:1 (identical) to 21:1 (black on white). WCAG uses it to decide whether text is readable for people with low vision.
What do AA and AAA mean?
WCAG conformance levels. AA is the standard target: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold). AAA is stricter: 7:1 and 4.5:1.
What counts as "large text"?
Text at least 18pt (24px), or 14pt (about 19px) bold and larger. Large text gets the easier 3:1 AA bar.
How do the suggested fixes work?
The tool nudges the lightness of your text or background color just enough to clear the 4.5:1 AA bar, keeping the hue you chose.
