A few good questions.
Is this free, and does my PDF get uploaded?
Yes, it is free. Your document is processed in a Web Worker on your device. The website downloads its public PDF engine and preview assets, but sends no PDF, extracted text or filename to a processing server. There are no accounts, credits or daily compression quotas.
What is the difference between the three modes?
Original quality compresses the file structure and streams without intentionally changing image pixels. Balanced and Smaller file additionally recompress supported images as JPEG. All modes preserve PDF text and vectors instead of turning entire pages into images. Review the output: images and scans may lose detail in the image modes.
Can you make every PDF smaller than 100 KB or 1 MB?
No. Some PDFs are already optimized, or need more space to stay useful. A target lets the tool try progressively lower image qualities if you allow it. It reports whether the goal was met. If compression produces a larger file, your download stays the original. KB means 1,000 bytes and MB means 1,000,000 bytes here.
Will text, forms and links still work?
The engine rewrites PDF structure and supported image streams; it does not flatten pages. Text, vector graphics, links, forms and page dimensions are retained where the source supports them. Always test important form fields and accessibility behavior in your PDF viewer. This is not a PDF/A, accessibility or legal-validity certification.
What about passwords and digital signatures?
Use an unlocked, unsigned original. Password-protected documents and PDFs with populated signature fields are not processed by this tool. Blank signature fields can remain. Rewriting a signed PDF can invalidate its digital signature, even if it looks the same. The original file is never overwritten.
Why is there little or no reduction?
Existing JPEG, JPEG 2000, JBIG2 or other compact data may leave little room for improvement. The engine does not downsample page resolution, convert every image codec, subset fonts or remove document content. Original quality usually saves less on scanned PDFs. Try an image mode if some loss of photo detail is acceptable.
What are the browser limits?
Choose one PDF at a time, up to 50 MB and 500 pages. Large scans can use much more memory than their file size. Performance varies by device; a desktop works better for large files. Cancel stops the compression worker. The tool needs a modern browser with WebAssembly, Web Workers and PDF.js support.
