Frequently asked questions
What is a hash?
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of your input. Change one character and the hash changes completely — which is why hashes are used to verify file integrity and store password fingerprints.
Which algorithm should I use?
For security (passwords, tokens): SHA-256 or SHA-512. For simple checksums and non-security identifiers: MD5 is fine and fast. SHA-1 sits in the middle — legacy only, don't use it for anything new.
Is MD5 safe?
Not for security — researchers can craft two different inputs with the same MD5 hash (collision attacks). It's still perfectly fine for checksums, cache keys, and non-adversarial uses. We show this warning on the tool itself.
Can I reverse a hash to get the original text?
No — hash functions are one-way by design. Short, common inputs can be guessed via rainbow tables, which is another reason to prefer SHA-256/512 with a salt for passwords.
Can I hash a file instead of text?
This tool hashes text only. To checksum a file, hash its contents elsewhere or use your OS tools (sha256sum on Linux/macOS, certutil on Windows) — then compare against the hash shown here.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. All hashing runs locally in your browser — MD5 in pure JavaScript, the SHA family via the Web Crypto API. Your text never leaves your device.
