Frequently asked questions
What is URL encoding?
URL encoding (percent-encoding) converts characters that aren't allowed in a URL — like spaces, ñ or emoji — into a % followed by two hex digits, e.g. a space becomes %20. It's required by the URL standard.
When should I encode vs decode?
Encode when you're putting user text into a URL, e.g. a search query in a link. Decode when you receive a URL with % sequences and want to read the original text.
What's the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
This tool uses encodeURIComponent, which encodes every special character including / ? & =. That's what you want for encoding a single value (like a query parameter). encodeURI is for whole URLs and leaves those separators intact.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Encoding and decoding happen entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type ever leaves your device.
Why did decoding fail?
decodeURIComponent needs well-formed input — every % must be followed by two hex digits. A lone % or a truncated sequence at the end will fail; fix the input and try again.
