Frequently asked questions
What is a UUID?
A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) is a 128-bit identifier written as 32 hexadecimal digits in five groups (8-4-4-4-12), like f47ac10b-58cc-4372-a567-0e02b2c3d479. They're designed to be unique without needing a central registry.
Which UUID version does this generate?
Version 4 — the random variant. Each UUID carries 122 bits of cryptographic randomness from your browser's crypto.randomUUID(), making collisions practically impossible.
Is a UUID the same as a GUID?
Essentially yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same concept — a v4 UUID and a GUID are interchangeable in practice.
Are my UUIDs private?
Yes. Generation happens entirely in your browser with the Web Crypto API. Nothing is sent to any server — the values only ever exist on your device.
What are the uppercase / no-dashes options for?
Some systems require uppercase hex or compact 32-character strings without hyphens (e.g. certain database columns or URL-safe IDs). The underlying randomness is identical either way.
What are UUIDs used for?
Database primary keys, API tokens, session IDs, distributed tracing correlation IDs, unique filenames, and test fixtures — anywhere you need an identifier that's unique without coordination.
