Frequently asked questions

What counts as a letter?

Any Unicode letter — a to z plus accented letters like é, ñ, ü and letters from other alphabets. Numbers, spaces, punctuation and emojis are counted separately, not as letters.

Which letters count as vowels?

The five classic vowels a, e, i, o, u plus their accented forms (à, é, ü and so on), in both upper and lower case. Every other letter counts as a consonant.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. All counting happens instantly in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you type ever leaves your device.

How is the frequency chart sorted?

Most frequent letter first, so you can spot the dominant letters in your text at a glance. Only letters that actually appear are shown.

Letters vs. characters — what's the difference?

Every letter is a character, but not every character is a letter. "Hello, world!" has 10 letters but 13 characters, because the comma, space and exclamation mark are characters, not letters.
